Description
Sony VPL-VW10HT Video Projector I have moved an do not have room for my theatre system. It is yours for a song. Starting bid $599. As we've seen, most LCD projectors are aimed primarily at people who want to make computer presentations, with video abilities added as an afterthought. Not so the Sony VPL-VW10HT. Its business is movies first, PCs second. But what exactly does this mean? The first crucial point is that the VW10HT is the only projector around at the moment which has a true 16:9 LCD panel. One or two other LCD projectors have a 16:9 mode, but they merely letterbox the 4:3 panel. The next vital factor is that the VW10HT has what is effectively a line quadrupling system. The vertical pixel resolution of the projector is 768, considerably more than PAL's 625 and NTSC's 525 lines of resolution. So to use the whole panel without leaving dead lines in the picture, the projector interpolates the missing data to give a totally smooth image. (The same principles are applied to fill the horizontal plane, too). Another clever touch is that the projector will adjust the lamp intensity depending on the source, reducing it for video. This improves contrast and reduces the projector's fan noise - so much so, in fact, that for the first time in my experience with LCD projectors I was undistracted by the fan noise. Other great features include a huge degree of digital keystone correction to compensate for the projector firing up from a table or down from the ceiling, a backlit remote, component as well as S-video connection, multiple aspect ratios, horizontal and vertical blanking and, perhaps most fascinatingly of all, support for high-definition TV. While HDTV may never be broadcast in the UK, HD DVD players are bound to either make their way over here from the States or else actually get released by a UK company (Sony itself, perhaps?). The great thing is, all these features - and others I haven't space to describe - help the VW10 to produce sublime pictures. A DVD of The Fifth Element looks so sensational; it's difficult to know where to start. Contrast, usually the biggest flaw with LCD projectors, is the best I've seen, which in turn helps it produce wonderfully natural, cinematic colors. Detail levels are also astonishingly acute and there is no trace of our old nemesis, LCD panel structure. The VPL-VW10HT is pretty much flawless. Sadly for the other contenders in the market, it's simply in a class of its own. Color separation is excellent, with scarcely any bleed and only a little edge softness. Color convergence is flawless, too, while detail is shown effortlessly through to the top-of-the-pile reading of 5.8MHz. Features : Anamorphic widescreen with 16:9 LCD panel; vertical/horizontal line interpolation; NTSC, Pal, SECAM playback; digital keystone correction; ceiling, floor and rear-projection support; lamp output adjustment; component video input; S-video input; PC/Mac input with XVGA capability; color warmth adjust; horizontal/vertical blanking to fit screen; black stretch; hard wirable remote Dimensions : 395(w) x 168(h) x 427(d)mm Ceiling mount is also included. This mount was used for a very brief time, and is in excellent condition. (The mount is black, but can easily be painted to blend with any environment.) The mount is attached in the photos, but will be removed for shipping. All the cables are included as well. A A very large 72" screen for theatre viewing is included too. Excellent condition.
