They are relatively inexpensive yet incredibly strong. The simple bolt-together design can be assembled quickly without any specialized carpentry, masonry, or welding skills. Best of all, the versatile rigid-frame design can be adapted to serve a variety of needs. Main Frames The defining feature of a rigid-frame steel building is its steel backbone of I-beam main frames. Each frame is made up of two or more columns supporting a rafter that runs laterally from one side of the building to the other. Spaced at intervals between the two endwalls, the main frames bear most of the load of the building. Depending on design considerations, main-frame components may be "hot-rolled" (made by extruding molten steel through a mold) or "built up" (made by welding plate steel). That is why "red iron" is used in most commercial construction -- from sheds to skyscrapers. Galvanizing may be useful in extraordinarily corrosive environments (chemical plants for example), but it can cause more problems than it solves in normal circumstances. It is expensive, and it turns a highly-versatile metal into a very unforgiving material. Galvanized steel cannot be factory-painted in-house, it cannot be bent without cracking the finish, and it cannot be welded without producing deadly fumes, not to mention a very ugly scar in the metal. It is also extremely abrasive and must be handled with heavy gloves. Though it is resistant to red rust, galvanized steel will develop white rust with prolonged exposure to moisture. The water-based, environmentally friendly red-oxide primer is designed to protect the steel before it is erected. When properly applied, it holds up against all but the worst abuse (like allowing water to pool for weeks on un-erected parts). Some manufacturers just spray-paint manufactured components, but cold-formed steel is always fully prepped and primed before being fabricated, and the red-oxide coat is baked on our frames. As a result, any exposed red iron inside your building will look good for years, and you can finish it out to look even better. RIGID FRAME Steel Building Frame Types Available Frames "Clearspan" rigid-frame buildings, by far the most popular type. We can also design and supply two other common frame types -- modular and single slope, which are described in detail below. *Lean-to drawings are not subject to the standard 7-14 day shipping time and could take longer depending on complexity. Clearspan Frames A proven performer, the clearspan rigid frame offers you incredible strength, durability, versatility, and economy. Because it requires no interior supports, the design is ideal when you need large areas of unbroken space, and people often use it for factories, warehouses, athletic facilities, agricultural buildings, and just about any type of storage. Just as importantly, you can create rooms or sections with partition walls and, since no wall bears any of the load, you can arrange or rearrange your floor plan whenever and however you wish. The clearspan design does have limits. As width increases, the frames must become proportionally heavier to bear the greater loads, and eventually the cost per square foot will begin to rise. Nevertheless, clearspan frames can be cost-effective for buildings as wide as 150' feet and even wider in some cases. Modular Frames Unlike clearspans, modular frames employ interior columns. By more evenly distributing the load, they reduce the cost of both the frame and foundation of extremely wide buildings. The savings start becoming noticeable when a building reaches about 80' wide, and the wider the building, the greater the savings. As a result, almost all buildings over 150' wide have interior columns. Modular designs are often used for factories and similar moderately to extremely large structures. Single Slope Frames Single slope frames have different eave heights on each sidewall so that the roof of the building "slopes" up from front to back. To describe a single slope design, you specify the eave height of the lower side and then define the pitch or slope of the roof. Roof pitch is expressed as the number of inches a roof rises vertically for every 12 inches it runs horizontally. Most single slope buildings employ a ½ :12 pitch, but they can be steeper. Single slope designs are commonly used for strip shopping centers, offices, and mini storage complexes. The most common cause of rust in metal roofs is the screw. Although the finish (Galvalume coating or paint) protects the exposed surface of the panels, the screws penetrate this painted surface and make direct metal-to-metal contact. If the screws do not seal properly or develop rust themselves, they will cause the panels to rust. CHRISTbilt supplies only the highest-quality self-drilling screws for use with its roof panels.
