Description
The Century Illustrated Monthly Magazine Vol LXIV, New Series XLII, May 1902 to October 1902 THE GREAT SOUTHWEST WITH TWO COLOR ILLUSTRATIONS BY MAXFIELD PARRISH: The Great Southwest occurs in 3 parts with a total of 14 Parrish illustrations: 2 full page color, 9 full page black and white, and also 3 half page b/w. Very beautiful scenery. The illustrations are generally in very good condition, there is occasional minor edgewear to the page containing the illustrations but the illustrations are completely intact. One of the color Parrish illustrations has light edgewear to bottom of page with a couple of tiny tears that does not affect the image. There is some light browning around the edges of some pages. INTERESTING COLLECTION OF ARTICLES PERTAINING TO PUBLIC WORKS AND INFRASTRUCTURE ILLUSTRATED BY JULES GUERIN : "The New New York" contains contains 5 full page color, 2 full page & 7 half page b/w illustrated by Guerin, "Art in Public Works. Aqueducts - Water Towers - Power Houses - Reservoirs - Bridges" contains 2 full & 4 half page b/w illustrations, "Civic Improvement, What to do and How to Do it" contains several small b/w, "A Great Civic Wakening in America" contains 5 half to full page illustrations, "Civic Improvement in Streets and Highway" contains 2 full page & 4 half page b/w (this article has light edgewear to upper corners of the pages containing the illustrations). Other Guerin illustrations are generally in very good condition. Although most of the internal pages are intact and the artwork is in nice shape, the overall condition of the Century Volume would have to be classed as poor because of the cover. The cover is badly damaged, the cloth board is damaged, the cover is completely detached at the spine - the binding is loose in several places. Please note there are some missing pages: pgs 667 - 674, all others present. Again, the pages inside the volume are mostly in very good condition, smooth and intact with the exception that several pages at the very beginning and very end of the volume show light to moderate edgewear. The book has a slightly musty smell which has improved since it has been in my possession - airing it out. There are actually a number of very interesting articles, in addition to those noted above, contained in the volume. To name a few: "Triumph of American Bridge Building" by Frank Skinner, "Bloodhounds in America", illustrated by H. R. Poore - some lovely b/w dog pictures here, a couple of articles about the moon with photos, several articles on volcanos including Pelee, West Indian eruptions and others, "P. T. Barnum Showman and Humorist" by Joel Benton, "Our Equatorial Islands" illustrated by Charles M. Bull - lovely full page bird prints here in b/w, "The Summer Life of the Queen of Rumania", "Building New York's Subways" by Arthur Ruhl with daigrams and illustrations, "Difficult Engineering in the Subway " by Frank Skinner. An Interesting volume, 106 years old... The volume has 970 pages and appears to be complete with the above noted exception. This is a huge volume! If you have any questions about the articles or art work please don't hesitate to email me, I'm glad to answer. Thanks for looking!
