More about the designs 200 designs represent a LOT of work. Jewelry designs are painstakingly carved from wax with an assortment of scrapers and files. Some of the simpler designs only took me 4 to 5 hours but the harder designs sometimes 12 to 16 hours. I figure I averaged 7 to 9 hours per design. At 7 hours per design thats 1400 hours of work or about 8 months of 40 hours per week. If you hired a wax carver at $30 per hour and believe me most of them don't work that cheap. It would cost you $42,000 or about $210 dollars per design. Then you would need to cast the masters and make a mold. That in itself would cost from $40 to $80 per mold. I switched into pewter casting until about 2 years ago when i decided to sell the pewter business and have this military unit product line made When I found out what it was going to cost me to have someone design 200 units. I decided to try it on my own. It took me about a year of 30 to 40 hour weeks just to get good at wax carving. A year of working before I could really even start on the designs. Now I knew why wax carvers got $30 plus per hour. After another year of carving, casting, and molding. I realized I like to do the carving more than I like to do the casting. I want to continue to carve designs. I have a complete jewelry making shop that I dont want to use, I want to design instead.
