Description
HP Agilent 3048A Phase Noise Measurement System. The 3048 phase noise measurement system uses the power of a very flexible software program to automate phase noise carrier measurements. The system includes the 11848A phase noise interface which contains phase lock loops and phase detectors. Measurement menus allow the operator to specify the measurement process, ie PN measurements with PLL, with out a PLL, FM Discriminator and AM Noise measurements, including the automatic calibration of the system. Pulsed carrier measurements are also a menu option. Several output formats are available to the user, including graphical plots of the single side-band phase noise power of the signal, integrated noise power, or the calculated ALLEN VARIANCE including tablature data results of detected spurs. A real time measurement mode is available to monitor the level of phase noise and discrete spurs as changes are made to the device under test. SOME BASIC APPLICATIONS Reference Sources: The measurement range and low system noise floor shows the LPN performance of even the best crystal sources. If the users reference source is better that the 3048's the system has the flexibility to allow another of your tunable oscillators to be the system reference. VCO and SAW Oscillators: All measurements to an offset of 1 MHz from the carrier are specified to +- 2db accuracy. The system operator designing a low noise oscillator can have the system provide a complete graph of the detected noise and spurs for a prototype device or in a production environment. Microwave Sources: The system provides repeatable measurements of the output of a microwave source and also gives you the capability to measure the added noise of parts of the multiplier or synthesis circuits. Even erratic noise or spur behavior can be observed and measured using the system's noise monitor mode. The included 11729C Carrier noise test set and HP 8662A Synthesizer, solves the problem of finding a low noise reference source for measuring the PN of signals to 18 GHz. The 11729C downconverts the test signal using a low noise, multiplied reference signal from the rear panel 640 MHz signal from the 8662A. The test set also includes the AM noise measurement option. The included 8662A also provides a reference for signals up to 1280 MHz and has two modes of FM tuning available to meet differing PN measurement requirements. The test results are normally stored on disk. For a hard copy the customer will have to supply a compatible GPIB printer. The supplied software, supports a large variety of older printers.
