Description
This very old vintage Bell System canvas bag was apparently used by lineman "W." and still contains a tool belt and a set of telephone tree pole climbing hooks. The bag's leather handles and straps are mostly still intact and pliable except for the back side which has some fencing wire holding the side support together. The canvas has one hole in the back side, about 3" x 3.5" rectangle. The belt still has the pole-climbing strap attached with the hooks still operable on the drop forged steel loop. I see one small leather piece torn off, but I think it is the piece laying loose near the climbing hooks in the first picture. Also, I'm not sure if the lineman had suspender straps that were to go with this or not, but it appears it is either set up for suspender clamps or else the suspenders were cut off at some point. The leather top belt strap of one of the climbing hooks was inscribed with BELL SYSTEM 1746. The same hook set with the inscription also has a hand written red-ink "W." labeling that lineman's climbing hook. The entire bag and contents weighs around 15 pounds - those linemen must have had some strong muscle and will-power to get the weight of their belts plus the weight of any repair tools up and down the poles all day long. Their work commands quite a bit of my respect. This particular bag was found in rural North Dakota. Unfortunately, I don't have any more history to go along with the bag. It was discovered while cleaning out an old vehicle we had recently purchased. Buyer pays all shipping and handling - use shipping calculator for your cost.
