This piece is very heavy wood with classic designs drawn on it with a color number system. The designs have brass pieces placed into them in certain areas. From what I understand, these brass pieces would stamp the ink onto the paper. Each element of design only has certain areas done with the brass stampers because these would stamp only one color. Multiple rolls of the same pattern would be used - one for each color - to make a complete sheet of paper. It's just amazing to think of the amount of work that goes into placing all these small, curved and shaped pieces of brass.           The pattern that this roller has drawn on it is full of classical elements.  There are columns ,winged birds, lion faces, angelic putti , a  nude goddess , a clam shell with pearl, flowers and swags, urns with fire. The paper produced must have been gorgeous.          This roller is probably European , there are brass letters and #'s at the top that spell out 8597 Directoire. The roller has a hole that goes from one end to the other and I've seen lamps made from them since the hole thru the center makes this easy. I think it would be great just standing alone as an element of interest. The measurements are 20 1/2" tall and 7" W and it weighs about 20 lbs., the inner hole diameter is 2".
